PlayStation 4 sales pass over 82 million, nearing PS3’s lifetime numbers

Sony has announced the quarterly financial report for this year. The sales figures for the PlayStation 4, which has been on the market for 5 years, seem to pass the PS3 at year’s end.

Sony announced its financial report covering the first quarter of 2018. Since the release of the PlayStation 4, the total sales have reached 82.2 billion. According to the financial year’s report, Sony sold 3.2 million PlayStation 4s in the quarter, At the end of the year, it expects to reach 17 million sales in total. The same console looks like a 3.2 million drop for Sony, which sold 3.3 million units in the same quarter of last year, but the figures for a product that has been on the market for 5 years are pretty good.

Launched on the market in 2013, PlayStation 4 is on its way to becoming one of the top selling game consoles with 82.2 million sales in total. The PlayStation 2, which has reached the highest sales figure of 155 million today, is followed by the original PlayStation with 102.5 million and the PlayStation 3 with 84 million.

Nintendo’s switch, which was launched in March of 2017, has sold nearly 20 million consoles to date. Another gaming console manufacturer Microsoft has stopped publishing sales figures for Xbox One, so we can not see the console in this list. Regarding the issue, market researcher Newzoo believes that by 2018, the global gaming market will reach $ 137.9 billion. The consoles cover only 25 percent of the market space, while the rest include large budget games, additional content and after-sales monetization options.

This year PlayStation 4 sold more than 3 million copies within the first three days of reaching high sales figures through the game of God of War. Another great game for the console, Spider-Man, will be released exclusively to the PlayStation 4 on September 7th.
